Plot

A fight breaks out in a tea shop where Fuu works as a waitress. All begins when Fuu accidentally spills drinks over the local magistrate’s son. She is then saved from harassment by an eerie samurai, Mugen. Mugen starts a duel with another young and dignified samurai named Jin. They end up destroying the entire tea shop and also killing the magistrate’s son. For this, they are arrested, convicted and set for execution.

Fuu saves them on one condition, they have to help her find the ‘Samurai who smells of sunflowers’ ( you read it right! ). That is the same hesitation that Mugen and Jin feel to accompany Fuu on her quest. The story follows the adventure of these three fellows on their journey across Japan to find this mysterious Samurai.

Characters

All three characters in this anime are very peculiar and I think is the strength of this anime. Fuu is a clumsy yet bright and energetic female. Though she manages to get into trouble frequently, she is the glue between the trio. Mugen is a samurai with a wild and unconventional fighting style that resembles break-dancing. He is quick-tempered, impatient, ruthless and at times rude. He believes in freedom, liberty, and fighting spirit. Though he is not a very amicable personality, his character is very dynamic and evolves in the anime.

Jin is a highly skilled samurai with a traditional and classic style of sword fighting. He is impassive and cold. However, Mugen and Fuu rely on him because of his calm composure. Mugen considers him a formidable opponent and wishes to defeat him someday. The evolvement of the relationship between the trio is subtle yet something to look forward to.

Verdict

Definitely, this anime is one of its kind and worth trying. I am pretty sure that you won’t find a samurai anime with bits of break-dancing, beatboxing, record-scratching or rapping quite often. And don’t forget the elegantly presented sword fighting scenes. Though the plot sounds less appealing, it doesn’t disappoint and all characters suit well in with the plot. Overall, it is a fun ride with the samurais.
